Planning for DASH to Malawi 2015

Now that our exams are over, the focus can shift from revision and studying, to planning our trip to Malawi. DASH to Malawi 2014 was an incredible experience and hopefully this year will be the same!

My current planning focuses for the trip involve:
  • Writing a malaria report using statistics from the local clinics around Fisherman's Rest, to encourage everyone to take their anti-malarials
  • Planning a water monitoring programme to ensure that the water coming from boreholes is safe to drink
  • Finding a sponsor or donor to provide some much needed reagents for our water monitoring project
  • Developing an action plan for the implementation of an albinism awareness programme around Fisherman's Rest and Mangochi
And there's a lot more to come!

This was our first group picture taken on our first day in Malawi at Mbame school.

As a group we worked closely with Mbame school, we visited their regularly over the duration of our visit to read to the children and make the most of their beautiful school library.

I will always the remember the joy of reading to the little ones at Mbame, and seeing their faces as they read the books back to us. This was one of the standout moments for me personally, maybe because it was my first day in Malawi and everything was SO overwhelming, but I am really looking forward to reading books to the same children this summer.

I cannot contain my excitement for Malawi this summer, I was so overwhelmed and excited last summer on my first journey out there! But this year is different, whilst I partly know what to expect, I'm so looking forward to seeing all the wonderful people I met out there last year and all the children at the schools that we be-friended.

Last summer on my volunteer trip to Malawi, I was lucky enough to see some amazing things. Among those things were the views from 2500m above sea level at the Chambe Peak of Mulanje Massif; the tallest mountain in Malawi. I will never forget the "i'm on top of the world" feeling and the stunning views that came with it.

This was my first sunset in Malawi; summer of 2014. Little did I then know that my volunteer experience in Malawi would have changed my life and the way I live today. Bring on DASH to Malawi 2015!
